GEISMAR – Dutchtown’s 12-game winning streak came to an end Friday night as 24th-seeded Westgate upset the top-seeded Griffins 29-14 in the Class 5A quarterfinal playoff game.

GEISMAR – Dutchtown’s 12-game winning streak came to an end Friday night as 24th-seeded Westgate upset the top-seeded Griffins 29-14 in the Class 5A quarterfinal playoff game.

The Tigers of New Iberia collected four turnovers and utilized a ball control offense out of its Wing-T formation.

Westgate (8-4) took a 12-0 lead in the first half. After extending the margin to 22-0 early in the fourth quarter,

Dutchtown stormed back with a pair of touchdowns, but Westgate held off the rally and added another score.

“We dug ourselves a big hole in the first half. Westgate played well and kept the ball away from us,”?said Dutchtown head coach Benny Saia, who led the school to its first unbeaten regular season and first district title. “I’m so proud of my players. They took me to places I’ve never been as a coach. They’ve got a lot of class, a lot of character and they never quit.”

Dutchtown’s Mason Nickens set up the first touchdown when he dashed 68 yards out of the shotgun formation. He then carried on a 1-yard scoring run. Graham Wilfong added the extra point.

Nickens scored again when he caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Leon Blouin. Wilfong’s extra point cut the Westgate lead to 22-14.

Dutchtown (12-1) nearly recovered the onside kick with 2:21 remaining, but Westgate’s D’Nerius Antoine came away with the ball from the bottom of the pile.

Antoine ran for two touchdowns, including the final 52-yard scoring run that put the game out of reach for the Griffins. On the carry, he appeared to be stopped, but broke away for the long score at the 1:55 mark.

Westgate finished with 338 rushing yards, as Antoine led the way with 110.

Dutchtown running back Effrem Reed finished with 69 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Blouin had 13 yards on 14 carries. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 127 yards.

Dutchtown was eliminated after taking two playoff wins. In the bidistrict round, the Griffins held off No. 32 Covington 35-27 in Geismar. In the regional playoff, Dutchtown took a 38-26 win over Brother Martin in New Orleans.
Westgate will host No. 4 West Monroe Friday in the semifinal match.

The winner will face either No. 27 Acadiana or No. 2 St. Thomas More in the state championship Saturday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
