The 49 candidates for the 2010 Doak Walker Award have been announced, and it includes several Louisiana running backs.

The award goes to college football's top running back. Semifinalists will be selected Nov. 10. The National Selection Committee will vote on finalists Nov. 22. A second vote will determine the recipient Nov. 29. The committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected specials representatives.

The winnner will be announced live on ESPN Dec. 9.

In its 21st year, the award is named for SMU's three time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.

LSU senior Richard Murphy, a Rayville native, is among six Southeastern Conference players on the list, including Alabama's Mark Ingram, Florida's Jeff Demps, Auburn's Mario Fannin, Arkansas' Dennis Johnson and Kentucky's Derrick Locke.

Other candidates from Louisiana colleges include: Louisiana Tech's Lennon Creer and Louisiana Monroe's Frank Goodin.

As for other watch lists, LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson is a candidate for the Lott Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Jim Thorpe Award, Walter Camp Award and Bednarik Award. LSU linebacker Kelvin Sheppard is up for the Lott Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Bednarik Award, Butkus Award and Rotary Lombardi Award. LSU defensive tackle is on the Outland Trophy watch list, quarterback Jordan Jefferson is on the Manning Award list and kicker Josh Jasper is on the Lou Groza Award list.
