Bonfires and fireworks lit the sky on Christmas Eve along the levee in neighboring St. James Parish. The annual tradition dates back to the 1880s. Popular lore suggests the light from the fires guides Papa Noel to children’s homes. This year, more than 100 bonfires started burning at around 7 p.m.
