East Ascension outscored Denham Springs 19-10 in the third quarter on way to a 73-47 non-district win Tuesday night at EAHS’ gym.

“We wanted to win bad and I think our guys played hard,” East Ascension head coach Kenny Almond said. “It wasn’t our best game handling the ball but they knew the urgency. We played pretty good in that third quarter.”

East Ascension (13-2) was coming off just its second loss of the season and are preparing to host the Spartan Classic this weekend.

Quinn Coco led the Spartans with 15 points. Kenny Varnado and Keith  Fleming each provided 10, while Ferrell Strode and Corey Lane each had nine.

Denham Springs (2-11) was led by Randy Lathers with 16 points. Jack Fridge added nine and Wes Hoover contributed eight.

“They used three different presses and our guards are very young and I think that was probably the only difference,” Denham Springs head coach Wynn Wingate said. “Other than that I think we played them pretty well.”

Coco’s penetrating dish to Tyler Wright for a 3-pointer in the left corner at the buzzer put East Ascension ahead 34-26 going into half-time.

“I thought the big play in the whole game was Tyler Wright’s 3-pointer right before half,” Almond said. “That might have took a little wind out of their sails. It was a good play by Quinn Coco to penetrate and find him. We just put him in for that and he got a chance and took advantage of it. That was a good play.”

Denham Springs had cut the Spartans lead just before on Hunter Ethridge’s dish to Ricky Hope.

“I knew we were going to give up an open shot and I knew (Wright) could hit that,” Wingate said. “We gambled on it. That gave them a little motivation but I think the press eventually wore us down and East Ascension is pretty good.”

Lathers’ put back opened the second half before East Ascension went on a 6-0 run courtesy of Coco’s pull up jumper and Varnado’s tip and lay-up off a steal. Gary Weber’s put back made it 42-29. Fleming’s spin inside preceded Weber’s dish to Lane off a steal before Lathers’ inside bucket in transition made it 53-36 going into the final frame.

After Rashad Muse’s pull up jumper to open the stanza, the Spartans went on a 11-0 run capped by Lane’s pull up jumper along the right baseline. Lathers’ transition basket and one cut it to 66-44 before Kerry Weber’s 3-pointer near the top of the key. Wright baseline drive reflected the final tally.

Denham Springs jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the contest before East Ascension went on a 6-0 run highlighted by Coco and Varnado’s lay ups off steals. Fridge’s 3-pointer gave the Yellow Jackets their final lead before Varnado passed out to Kerry Weber for a 3-pointer on the left wing and Lane drove baseline.

Coco fed Gary Weber off a steal to open the second quarter giving East Ascension an 18-11 lead. Ethridge’s dish to Hoover for a 3-pointer from the left corner cut it to 27-22 before Coco’s slashing drive.
