St. Amant got 18 saves from goal keeper Samantha Jackson on way to a 1-0 District 6-1 opening victory over East Ascension Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

“We have taken some licks at the beginning of the season against some good teams but that is result we were hoping for,” St. Amant head coach Jason Naquin said. “It was exactly what I thought it was going to be. A very tight game. EA is a very good team. Both of us had lots of opportunities. They had more but I think we did a good job of holding their scoring opportunities back in quality.”

The only goal of the contest came with under two minutes remaining in the second half when Helen Templet connected off Erica Arnold’s corner shot which ricocheted off Nicoli Rowell.

“We work pretty hard on the timing of those and trying to clean up making sure we don’t miss any opportunities that come to us,” Naquin said.  “Helen Templet did a real job of being on the back post. That whole scoring opportunity starts with Erica Arnold’s ball across. She laid a great ball across the defense to the soft side. I don’t know if the ricochet helped or mattered because Helen was going to be there anyway. I am not sure EA could have don’t a whole lot about it. It was just one of those well played balls.”

East Ascension out shot St. Amant 18-7.

“That is a little disappointing,” East Ascension head coach Christopher Goodall said. “We definitely had more possessions but it is that rivalry game. It is what it is.
“We pushed very heavy offensively at the end with a 3-3-4 formation but we just couldn’t break it. That is the way it goes. It was a very enjoyable game and the beauty of district is that we play them again.”

East Ascension nearly tied it late in the game when Bianca Joyeux headed Kristen Simoneaux’s corner kick just over.

Jackson saved Claudia Flores’ shot before Rowell’s shot was just high. The Lady Spartans then had three straight shots at goal from Ashley Hunsberger, Haley Gautreau and Jordan Guedry that failed to put them on the board. Arnold’s drive was wide right before EA goalkeeper Arienne Ferchaud saved her next shot.

Jackson corralled Keely Villar’s far shot before Arnold’s shot was wide left. Simoneaux’s corner kick was kicked out and Jackson caught Guedry’s shot before Templet’s goal.

“It was a good play from the corner kick,” Goodall said. “Those goals count. It is not just the 30-yard pile drives. It could be the one that just goes dink into the back post.”

Gautreau’s header was just right to open the second half before Jackson saved Simoneaux and Brooke Lambert’s shots.

“(Jackson) is very strong,” Naquin said. “We can rely on her a little bit more in that sense. We can allow another team to have a few more chances because she can clean up stuff. We try to protect her from as much as we can but we expect her to step up and make saves. There is a lot of responsibility on her shoulders.”

Ferchaud caught Joleigh Hartman’s direct kick before Arnold’s was wide left. Villar’s  pass to Devon Darr was wide left before Ferchaud scooped up Lexi Crews’ shot.
