SORRENTO – A New Orleans man died at the scene of a crash involving two vehicles Sunday night on Interstate 10 East near the Hwy. 22 exit, State Police said in a release.

Juan F. Molina, 24, one of seven occupants in a Ford pickup truck struck by a Nissan Altima, was pronounced dead after the crash around 10 p.m. by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office, police said.

The driver of the Altima survived the wreck, exited the vehicle, walked across the interstate and then stole a Volkswagon Beetle that belonged to a couple who stopped to aid the crash survivors, police said.

According to the release, the Altima was traveling east on the shoulder of the interstate, attempted to enter the right lane and crashed into the truck. After the collision, troopers said the Ford began rotating to the right and exited the roadway to the right. After leaving the road, the truck rolled several times, ejecting several passengers.

Police said two persons sustained serious injuries, including the driver, Antonio J. Zeron, 53, New Orleans and the right front passenger, Nora Zeron, 34 of New Orleans.  They, along with two juveniles who sustained minor injuries, were transported by Acadian Ambulance to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.

The middle front passenger, Claudia Murrilla-Funel, 28, of New Orleans, and a juvenile both sustained minor injuries and were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital by Gonzales EMS, troopers said.
