Rodeo ridin’ and ropin’ are underway full speed in Gonzales this week at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center for the Louisiana High School Rodeo Association and National High School Rodeo Association state championship finals.
Lamar-Dixon performances begin Saturday, June 14 and continue at 7 p.m. every night through the week with the championship round set for June 20.
The top 36 cowboys and cowgirls from high schools throughout the state compete in events just like a professional rodeo contestants.
Categories include bull riding, bare back riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf and team roping, barrel racing, break-away roping, goat tying and more.
Several students from Ascension Parish will be competing. They include Shelby Goodwin, Dutchtown High School; Randi Robert, East Ascension High School; Tyler Waguespack, East Ascension High School; Clint Myers, East Ascension High School; Cody Cohoon, St. Amant High School; Josh Arceneaux, St. Amant High School; Grant Smith, Dutchtown High School; Caleb Lavigne, St. Amant High School; and Jacob O’mara, St. Amant High School.
The top four contestants in each contest will represent Louisiana in the High School Rodeo National Finals in Farmington New Mexico in August.
Tickets at Lamar-Dixon are $5 through Thursday, $7 Friday and $8 for the championship round Saturday.
