East Ascension started promising with a 2-0 lead in the first inning of its game with Rummel Friday night in the Jay Patterson Shootout.
But Rummel tied the score in the second and scored the deciding two runs in the fourth as the Raiders claimed a 4-2 win at Johnny Ambeau Park.
John DeArmond, who started on the mound for the Spartans, threw out the first pitch in honor of Jay Patterson as family members looked on prior to the game.
Lead-off batter Chase Rivett hit a double to center to get the Spartans started. Cortland Giardina followed and bunted Rivett over to third. Jared Kleinpeter reached on an error and Rivett scored the first run of the game.
East Ascension pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third. The second run scored on a wild pitch.
A ground out to first for the third out left two runners on base.
The Raiders answered in their turn at bat. Rummel loaded the bases on a bunt with two outs. A single brought around two runs to tie the score 2-2.
The Spartans then came up with a defensive gem as a hit to right was fired into the catcher at home for a tag out at the plate.
In the fourth inning, Rummel loaded the bases with one out. East Ascension went for a double play but the throw to first was errant. Two runs scored, giving Rummel a 4-2 lead.
