HEAD OF ISLAND – After a week that saw the most five-bass limits weighed in then in any previous Wednesday Evening Bass Tournament this year, things seemed to be getting better and better.

But for the 31 boats that put in at Canal Bank Club for the weekly contest, nature pitched a curve ball. Over the weekend and early in the week, the water fell out because of a west wind. So, naturally, when it quit falling, it came back in to the waterways, which is usually a kiss of death for fishermen.

Weighing in the only limit for the day was the team of Todd Rabalais and Jody Floyd. Their five bass tipped the scale at 7.02 pounds and netted them $380 for first place. They also had the “Big Bass” of the night, a 2.74-pound fish. Their successful technique of flipping plastics paid off nicely as their total take for the night was $488.

Bay Tuggle and Corey Wheat used the combination of plastic worms and a buzz bait to entice three weighers to the live well and capture second place for the night. Their total weight was 5.34 pounds. The buzz bait fooled a bass that weighed 2.66 and took runner-up honors for “Big Bass.” The team’s combined payout was $318.

Kevin Cantillo and Cory Brignac fooled keepers with plastic baits for a total of 4.92 pounds and $195 for their third-place effort.

George and Pig Sevario caught three fish that weighed 3.98 pounds for fourth place and a $109 payday.

The fifth-place team of Tre and Austin Gautreau also brought in three keepers, tipping the scales at 3.36 pounds and taking $76 for their efforts.

Garrett Strickland and David Cavell caught four bass that weighed 3.34 pounds and finished in sixth place, winning $54.

A total of 31 teams took to the water for the tourney.

The weekly meal, a chicken stew by Chef Reggie Sheets of Cajun Meats, was provided by Murray’s Heating and Air.

During this week’s tournament Aug. 6, the payouts will change for this week only. All the entry money will still be paid back, but instead of paying one place for every five entrants, the payout will be for only the top three teams.
