HEAD OF ISLAND - “Man, was it hot! No wind, no current and that made the fishing tough.”

That was the dock talk during last week’s weigh-in at the Wednesday Evening Tournament, held out of Canal Bank Club on the Amite River Diversion Canal.

Along with the hot weather came some pretty hot fishing. Twenty-nine boats signed up for the weekly summer tournament. Seventeen of the boats brought fish to the scales, with three of the teams weighing in five-bass limits.

Kevin Lapeyrouse and Todd Rabalais brought in one of the five-bass limits, weighing in at 7.38 pounds and taking the first-place award of the week.

The team also had the second-largest “Big Bass,” weighing 2.98 pounds and earning a $43 prize. Along with the $375 the duo won for their top finish by fishing a plastic frog, their net for the night was a total of $418.

The second-place team of Jeff Bullion and Chuck Dufour worked a crank bait and red shad worms to net four bass that weighed in at 6.56 pounds. Their haul earned a check for $274.

Cody Roper and Kevin Cantillo brought the second five-fish stringer to the scales and tool third place with a total weight of 6.12 and an award of $193.

Taking fourth place was the team of David Cavell and Garrett Strickland with the third five-bass limit, weighing 5.88 pounds. Finesse worms caught all of the fish they brought to the scales.

Rounding out the paying places for total weight was the team of Dustin Welch and Don Hutchinson, with four fish that weighed in at 4.36 pounds and a check for $71.
“Big Bass” honors of the night went to the team of Jason and Gerald Cryer for a 3.12-pounder that exploded on a plastic frog in the duck grass. That fish netted the pair a pay out of $101.

The tourney is held each Wednesday during the summer. Entry is $40 and includes a free dinner.
