After a short shower, 37 teams of eager anglers headed out from Canal Bank Club to compete in the Wednesday Evening Bass Tourney.
The competition was a little closer this week, as Jason Graphia and Neil Whitum brought the only limit to the scales. Their efforts paid off pretty handsomely as the 7.80 total weight netted them first place and a check for $401. The 3.28 bass they landed for second place in the Big Bass competition added $55, for a total of $451. Their fish fell prey to a buzz bait.
The teams pretty much split directions; some north toward the Amite River and some motored in the direction of Blind River.
Just like last week, most of the teams reported catching plenty of bass. They just weren't big enough to meet the 12-inch size limit.
“Man, I think we caught the same two fish we weighed in last week,” Murry Alexander said. “The weigh master called out, ‘Two bass; big bass .96 pounds, total weight 1.86.’ Man, we did better than last week. We had 1.85 last week.”
Todd Murray and Jamin Garidel punched thick mats of grass with a Sweet Beaver that paid off with four keepers that weighed 6.24 and a second- place check for $272.
Casey Moran and Lance Little used a spinner bait to reel in only two fish, but one of them weighed 3.74 and took Big Bass honors for the night. The spinner bait broke as Little netted the lunker. Both fish weighed 5.22 for third place and netted the team $324 for their efforts.
Tre and Boyd Gautreau brought three keepers to the scales that weighed 4.92 and took fourth place and a cool $155.
Kelly and Corey Wheat also had three keepers for 3.42 and a fifth-place check for $117.
Gerald and Jayson Cryer had three for 3.40 and sixth place for $91.
Rounding out the payouts was the team of Chuck Dufour and Joel Mayon, with three for 3.26 and $65.
The meal sponsors were Subway and RTS Marine and Boat Supply, both in Head of Island.
