HEAD OF ISLAND – Bryan Stephens and Clemson Buras would have had a good excuse as to why they didn’t have many fish to weight in at last week’s Wednesday Evenng Bass Tournamant, fishing out of Canal Bank Club. The lower unit on the pair’s boat motor went out just before reaching Blind River in the Diversion Canal.
In a short tournament, one of the most important things one can do is fish instead of running around looking for a “honey hole.” So Stephens and Clemson did the only thing they could; they turned the boat around back toward the landing and started chunking.
Their misfortunes, which included having to be towed back to the landing, paid off in the end as they claimed the tourney’s total weight title.
While the two caught only two bass, their biggest tipped the scales at 3.70 pounds. The lunker gave them the biggest bass of the night and a pay-off of $112. Coupled with another nice fish, their total weight was 5.42 pounds that took the total weight payout of $392. A buzz bait helped to land the big bass.
Second place went to the team of Kevin Laparusse and Todd Rabalais with four bass that weighed 4.64 pounds total, for a payout of $280. Third went to Jacob Moyer and Joe LeBeau with three keepers totaling 4.58 and $202. Fourth place was taken by Garret Strickland and Corey Wheat with a three-bag haul weighing 4.18 and $112. Fifth place was Tre and Boyd Gautreau two fish that weighed 3.82 and a $78 prize.
Rounding out the payouts in was Chuck Dufour and Doug Landry with three bass weighing 3.25 and $56 bucks.
Tony Landry landed the second-place big bass, weighing in at 3 pounds, and took home $48 for his efforts.
Another of the fishermen faced a little different type of adversity. Davin Miller accidentally put two hooks of a treble (3) hook from a crank bait in his lower leg and left the bait attached to his leg as he finished fishing. His team weighed in its two keepers before leaving for the emergency room.
Thomas Marine supplied the meal and Reggie Sheets of Cajun Meats was the cook.
