BATON ROUGE – ULM’s run to the Sun Belt baseball title yielded more post-season honors as three Warhawks, including former Dutchtown and St. Amant High School standouts, were named to the All-Louisiana Baseball first team.

Senior outfielder Dexter Fontenot and senior second baseman Kyle Suire, along with  junior All-American shortstop Ben Soignier, were all honored by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Soignier and Fontenot were both first team all-Sun Belt selections, while Suire was a second team selection.

The three first team selections tie the Warhawks with LSU and New Orleans for the most in the state.

Suire, a 35th round selection on the New York Mets, finished second on the team hitting .367 with a ULM record 16 home runs by a second baseman -- breaking the record he set last year with 10. His 65 RBIs on the season rank second best all-time in ULM history trailing just Fontenot’s total from this year.

The Dutchtown High School graduate also scored the third most runs (67) in a season and had the fourth most hits (84). Suire was twice named Sun Belt Hitter of the Week and is currently playing for the Kingsport (Tenn.) Mets in rookie ball.

Fontenot, a former St. Amant Gator, finished just behind Soignier and Suire for the regular season batting title hitting at a .364 clip with 17 doubles and 12 home runs. The Gonzales native set the ULM single-season RBI record driving home 67 runs on the season.

He was named Pro-Line National Hitter of the Week on April 22 after hitting .650 (13-for-20) with four home runs, two doubles and 15 RBIs – he finished the week with a 1.350 slugging percentage and a 2.017 OPS.

Soignier, who was a 17th round selection of the Florida Marlins in the MLB Draft earlier this month, finished the season with the seventh-highest batting average in ULM history hitting at a .394 clip. Following the completion of conference tournament play, he was the nation’s leader in runs per game (1.46) and ranked 19th in hits (93) – both ULM single-season records.

The West Monroe native announced earlier this week that he would return for his senior season and try to become ULM’s first three-time All-American. He garnered All-American honors this season by Louisville Slugger and Ping!Baseball after earning freshman All-American honors by Louisville Slugger in 2006.

The Warhawks completed one of the best seasons in school history winning the Sun Belt Conference regular season championship in just their second year in the league.

ULM posted 34 wins for just the seventh time in school history and broke the single-season records for batting average (.329), hits (697), doubles (139), home runs (93), RBIs (465) and double plays turned (76).
