GEISMAR – Diversified Materials and Consulting Inc. surrendered five runs in the top of the seventh after taking a two-run lead into the inning to fall to Zachary 7-4 in summer Metro League play Thursday night at Dutchtown’s Griffin Park.
The loss overshadowed a solid pitching outing from Nick Shipman who lasted six innings giving up four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four. Troy Lewis took the loss in 2/3 innings of relief allowing three runs on one hit and three walks while striking out one.
Joe Martin picked up the win in one and 2/3 innings of relief surrendering no runs on no hits or walks while striking out three. Zachary starter Cade LeBlanc lasted three 2/3 innings surrendering four runs on four hits and one walk.
DMC got on the board first after Shipman retired the side in order in the bottom of the first inning. Jacob Waguespack drew a lead off walk and scored on Eric Babin’s sacrifice fly to center after Jared Dugas doubled to right.
Shipman and LeBlanc retired 12 of the next 14 batters they faced. Gabe Von Rosenberg grounded through the center of the infield in the second and Mason Pace lined over second in the third for Zachary but both were left stranded.
Joe Martin took second after grounding through second with one out in the top of the fourth and scored on Ryan Manuel’s liner to left to knot it up 1-1. Shortstop Lewis stepped on second after fielding Lance Pace’s grounder and threw to first to turn a double play ending the inning.
Dugas dropped a double into the left gap to open the bottom half and scored on a pass ball two outs later. LeBlanc hit Leon Blouin before Lucas Shipman lined to left and another run crossed on Nick Shipman’s liner through the center of the infield. Runners advanced on a wild pitch from reliever Jonathan Jrives before he walked Stephen Bright and Garette Rayburn to plate another run giving DMC a 4-1 lead.
Nick Shipman walked Von Rosenberg to open the fifth but struckout Brant Hernandez and Mason Pace before Hunter Duval grounded out to end the inning after Jacob Joiner was hit.
Martin drew a two out walk in the sixth and scored on Manuel’s triple to the right gap to cut DMC’s lead to 4-2.
Babin drew a leadoff walk in the bottom half but pinch running Court Schwing was picked off at second and Martin struckout Blouin and Austin Cheatwood to end the inning.
Von Rosenberg drew a leadoff walk to open the seventh and Hernandez lined to center to put runners on the corners. Lewis walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and a run scored on a groundout to second. Tanner Hebert drew a walk to load the bases again and a wild pitch plated another run to knot it up 4-4.
After Lewis struckout Bond Babin, Martin lined a triple to the right gap to cross two more runs before scoring on a wild pitch to reflect the final tally. Reliever Cheatwood forced Lance Pace into a groundout to end the inning after Lewis walked Manuel.
Martin retired the side in order in the bottom half covering first on a groundout to end the game.
