Last Saturday my wife, Deborah and I decided to make a road trip down La. 1 to Grand Isle. She’d been cooped up for a little over a week and she needed some “outside” time so we decided a trip to the barrier island was the perfect destination to spend a day getting there and back.

We had a few destinations in mind and one of the ones was to watch for the “road warriors” – the people that fish on the roadside. My route to the island usually takes me to the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Gramercy and then to La. 3127 and it didn’t take long to spot a few of those hardy souls fishing for supper.

The Gonzales Dolphins cruised by C.B. Pennington Thursday behind three triple winners and seven double winners at the City of Gonzales’ Jambalaya Park pool.

D.J. Rigdell, 18, led the way for the Dolphins winning the 100-yard individual medley in 1:09.15, the 50-yard backstroke in 31.34 and the 50-yard breaststroke in 32.47.

GEISMAR – Diversified Materials and Consulting Inc. surrendered five runs in the top of the seventh after taking a two-run lead into the inning to fall to Zachary 7-4 in summer Metro League play Thursday night at Dutchtown’s Griffin Park.

The loss overshadowed a solid pitching outing from Nick Shipman who lasted six innings giving up four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four.

A camper is tagged out at second base during a rag ball pick up game at the “Improve Your Game” baseball camp at East Ascension’s Johnny Ambeau Field Wednesday morning.

Hope Youth Development, Inc. recently completed a five week tennis camp.

The camp taught basics of tennis and etiquette on court. Campers were also required to check out a tennis book from the library and read it during the five weeks.

Tyler Green, 12, of Gonzales won the last contest between the campers and recieved a medal.

Redstick Sports 10U 007's fastpitch softball team earned the title of NSA State Champions of Louisiana by going undefeated in the Summer Showdown held at Walker Parks June 27-28.  The 007’s recenlty placed second in two illustrious tournaments held in Gulfport, Mississipppi, competing against teams from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

The girls on the Gonzales Thunder 8U Allstar Team gave their fathers a great Father's Day present this year. The team took first place at the Butch Gore Father's Day Tournament recently. They are from left, front, Chloe Leblanc, Ava Lambert and Jaylen Triola. Middle, Jadyn Rumfellow, Hannah Fontenot, Claire Sheets, Britney Schexnayder and Michaela Speligene.

Blake deVeer, an eighth grade student at Gonzales Middle has earned a position on the Louisiana Wrangler Junior High rodeo team and will be traveling to Gallup, New Mexico June 28-July 4 to compete in the 5th Annual Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo in the chute dogging competition.

deVeer finished first in the state finals this month in Kinder and qualified for nationals after placing third in year-end standings.

The Ascension Parish 4-H Shooting Sport’s Club held their 2009 Recognition Ceremony at Cabela’s June 16. 

Many special guest were in attendance including Louisiana 4-H State Agent David Bolt, EASL’s Barney Callahan, parish councilman Pat Bell and local 4-H agents Jamie Templet and Kayla Haydel.

Members of the Ascension 4-H Shooting Sports met to work on their new range, which is located in Sorrento May 30. Thad Bellow headed up the project to make sure everyone was on task with weed eating, picking up debris’, tractor work and burning wood. Rhett Bourgeois of Ascension Equipment and David Veasman loaned tractors and Connie Everett operated one of them.

I haven’t written much about the LSU baseball team this year. I followed them throughout the year and knew how good they were and could be, so I guess I didn’t want to jinx them.

Well, the season is over and the Tigers are clearly, without a doubt, the best team in the land after claiming the school’s sixth national championship in the sport Wednesday, so it is safe to talk Tiger baseball, now.

I’m typing this after LSU won the national championship and it’s sort of hard to think of anything else right now. But LSU baseball is over and football is next, so why can’t we do it again and win the BCS national championship? We can.

But the best moment for me was watching the embrace of Paul Mainieri and his dad as they soaked in their lifelong dream. I think it was the best for coach Mainieri also; both coaches. It’s a great thing for a dad to watch his kids do well.

A new championship era has dawned for LSU.

The Tigers (56-17) won their first College World Series Championship in nine years with an 11-4 win over top-seeded Texas in the decisive third game of the College World Series.

The victory gave the No. 3-seeded Tigers their sixth national title and their first since a win over Stanford under former coach Skip Bertmann. It also marked the first ever CWS win for LSU coach Paul Manieri.

Jared Mitchell was named the Outstanding Player of the College World Series.
