The East Ascension Spartans softball squad kicked off the St. Amant Invitational with an 8-1 romp over Central.

The Dutchtown Griffins saved the best for last as they notched a 7-1 win over Beau Chene in their third game of the St. Amant Invitational.

In the St. Amant Invitational tournament, the St. Amant Gators defeated Sacred Heart of Ville Platte, 9-0, and St. Thomas More, 5-2. The Gators lost to Barbe, 7-1.

BATON ROUGE – An LSU football player and basketball player were arrested Saturday night after an altercation in the Tigerland area, according to Baton Rouge Police.

LSU football signee Eric Reid of Dutchtown High has won the Franklin D. Watkins Award given each year to the nation’s top African-American high school scholar athlete, according to a news release from the National Alliance of African American Athletes.

MONROE – Former Dutchtown pictcher Jordy Poche notched his first win of the season as his ULM Warhawks beat Mississippi Valley State 8-4 Sunday.

The City of Gonzales in conjunction with many community leaders and volunteers will host the Dixie Youth World Series Aug. 6-12. Twenty-four teams will participate from the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. The undertaking by the city will involve over 300 volunteers from Ascension Parish.

Gregg Patterson is the chairman for this enormous event set to bring millions of dollars into the local economy during this week.

RAYMOND, Miss. – Matt Richard, formerly of East Ascension, had two hits for LSU-Eunice against Bossier Parish in the Wes Cliburn Memorial Tournament hosted by Hinds Community College.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced that the club has released defensive end Charles Grant, offensive lineman Jamar Nesbit and linebacker Mark Simoneau.

The 31st Annual Louisiana Sportsmen’s Show will be held at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center on March 12-14 and it’s expected to be the best one yet.

DONALDSONVILLE – A standing-room only crowd packed the Donaldsonville gym Tuesday night to watch the homestanding Tigers take an 80-70 playoff win over Pointe Coupee Central. The Tigers will face Jonesboro-Hodge next.
