With all the excitement and hoopla over the Saints’ Super Bowl win Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, the election of Mitch Landrieu as Mayor of the City of New Orleans came off as a low key event.

Happily voters took the election to heart as seriously as they took the big game to heart.

Landrieu, Louisiana’s Lt. Governor, the brother of Sen. Mary Landrieu and the son of former New Orleans’ Mayor Moon Landrieu, entered the race only a few weeks ago. And he was carrying the baggage of an embarrassing defeat in the last mayoral election at the hands of Ray Nagin.

Yet, Landrieu was elected Saturday, winning a majority of votes in the first primary, a most impressive victory. 

The new mayor will be going into office with more on his mind than filling Nagin’s shoes. He’ll be out to erase the memory of one of New Orleans’ worst mayor’s in recent history.

New Orleans voters believe Mitch Landrieu is the man for that job, and to put the city on a more high trajectory path to recovery.

We think New Orleanians made a good choice. Landrieu has excellent connections throughout Louisiana and on the national political scene. When you’re a city trying to recover from a devastating hurricane and break in the levees, who you know can be a powerful weapon in the fight to come back better than you were before the disaster event.

In one fabulous weekend, New Orleans claimed a progressive new mayor and the world’s best football team, the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints.

We’d say things are looking up in The Crescent City.
