No matter your political belief, this weekend should be a time to come together.

This Friday marks the 232nd anniversary of our country’s declaration of independence from the tyrannical rule of Great Britain. At that time, a band of brave men banded together to show the monarchy of England that they were tired of taxation without representation and wanted religious freedom as well. Their battle proved to be a success, as the United States of America came into being and became the “Land of Opportunity” for many.

While we remember obtaining our freedom, we must also remember those who fought valiantly to secure those freedoms we now enjoy. Many continue to do so in today’s world.

Keeping that in mind, there is an  opportunity to celebrate this weekend while also benefitting a great cause for those who protect us.

The St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department will host its Second Annual Rockin the River Festival at Rat Stock Saturday at the Jimmy Babin complex, located at the end of Bayou Terrace.

The department is trying to raise funds in order to build a new station along the Amite River Diversion Canal, the only portion of Ascension Parish that is without local fire protection. Currently, if there is a fire in that area, dispatchers call fire crews in Livingston Parish to handle fires because they are closer. While we appreciate the help of our neighboring parish’s fire crews, we know that the St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department wants to be able to keep fire protection within the parish.

Bands that will perform at the event include Southern Express, One Nite Only, BillBoard Band and Side Effects. There will also be jumping balloons and slides for children, as well as the first “Diversion Canal Idol” with Peppermint Patti Karaoke and an elaborate fireworks display by Gator Fireworks, sponsored by EATEL. There will also be a Campaign Alley for all political candidates in this fall’s elections to display signage at a cost of $50.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children, with proceeds going to help the department build the new station. The department already has the land donated for the site, with a fire truck also coming through a donation from a station in LaPlace. The department has received some state funding to help build the station. The goal for Saturday’s event is between $10,000 and $15,000.

Chief James LeBlanc and his staff volunteer their efforts to protect the St. Amant area, but also  support the community and Ascension Parish as a whole. Isn’t it time we repay the favor?
