The East Ascension Sportsman League took a guided tour of a part of the Kisatchie National Forest May 2.

The group left at 7 a.m. with a picnic lunch and returned at 5 p.m.

Highlights of the tour included seeing a Red Cocked-headed woodpecker colony and visiting the Kisatchie Bayou Camp and a cave in the forest.

The forest is spread across seven Louisiana parishes and totals over 604,000 acres of public lands.

Kisatchie offers over 40 developed recreation sites and more than 100 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.
