These students were selected on the basis of grades, a written essay, and an interview.
The programs will be collaborations of Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (CLAHEC), Ascension Parish School Board, Ascension Catholic High School, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
These students will spend five weeks (15 days) observing health care professionals in action and exploring health career opportunities through research, observation, and hands-on experience as hospital volunteers.
The student participants will observe the “team approach” in a rural medical facility, which encompasses health issues, patient care, job readiness skills, volunteer service, and post-secondary education requirements for health careers.
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a high school elective credit. The program supervisors from
St. Elizabeth’s Hospital are Rosie Kiper and Michelle DeSoto. The program educator is Lauren Bahlinger.
