Interviews for the 2009 “AHEC of a Summer” program have been conducted.

Students chosen to participate in the 2009 program at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital are Ashley Abney, Kayla Flenniken, and Danielle Owens from St. Amant High School; Manal Ahmed, Blasé LeBlanc, Hannah Schuette, and Shalia Wagner from Dutchtown High School; Ashley Wilson from East Ascension High School; Raven Boudoin from Ascension Catholic High School; and Nikia Martin from Donaldsonville High School.

Students from Ascension Parish chosen to participate in the Our Lady of the Lake program are Brittany Aucoin, Karley Broussard, Ryan Hamilton, Amanda Hoffman, Kristen Jones, Lauren Jordan, Alexandra Pilgrim, and Kaitlyn Richard from Dutchtown High School.

These students were selected on the basis of grades, a written essay, and an interview.

The programs will be collaborations of Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (CLAHEC), Ascension Parish School Board, Ascension Catholic High School, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

These students will spend five weeks (15 days) observing health care professionals in action and exploring health career opportunities through research, observation, and hands-on experience as hospital volunteers.

The student participants will observe the “team approach” in a rural medical facility, which encompasses health issues, patient care, job readiness skills, volunteer service, and post-secondary education requirements for health careers.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a high school elective credit. The program supervisors from
St. Elizabeth’s Hospital are Rosie Kiper and Michelle DeSoto. The program educator is Lauren Bahlinger.
