A group of Ascension Parish parents took to the streets this week to pass out hundreds of fliers opposing the parish school board’s redistricting plan.

The plan is an attempt to cut down overcrowding by spreading the population from one east bank high school to another.

Called Boundary Implementation Schedule Option 2F, the plan would transfer students who once fed into Dutchtown High School in Geismar into East Ascension High School in Gonzales.

The School Board adopted the option Jan. 15, 2008.

The group, called Save Our Community’s Schools, hopes passing out fliers will keep the issue in the public discussion.

Legal action has been taken though a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court.

A copy of Darrin Kenny Lewis Sr. vs. Ascension Parish School Board is available at the group’s Web site, www.socs07.org. A copy of the flyer is also available at the site.

According to the document, the plaintiff points to concerns which “directly affect the minority students at East Ascension High School and its ‘feeder’ schools.”

It goes on to state that the board has adopted a plan which will segregate a majority of non-white students.

“This action deprives the minority students at East Ascension High School of access to educational opportunities which are equal to those afforded to the students who attend the parish’s two predominately white high schools,” the document read.
