The St. Amant Wrestling team is having some success on the mat for the start of its 2018-2019 wrestling season

In a preseason Takedown Tournament, hosted by Live Oak, St. Amant had five first-place finishers: In the 106 weight class, sophomore Ty Didier, at 126, junior Corey Brownell, at 152, senior Alex Simoneaux, at 182, sophomore Fred Garrison and 195, junior-Alex Newman.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the Gators competed at the Warrior Open in their first official tournament of the season, hosted by St. Michael the Archangel. This gave St. Amant three first-place finishers: at 120, Corey Brownell, at 170, Hunter Hawkins and 220, Nicholas Fusilier. Brownell was chosen as the Outstanding wrestler for the lower-weight class with his overtime win over Live Oak’s Division-II 106 state champion Clayton Hill, with a 14-9 decision.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, the wrestling team crossed the bridge to West Baton Rouge to compete in the Brusly 8 tournament. The St. Amant wrestlers had a great day of competition as the team placed first with a team score of 263.5, which included three first-place finishers.

They were: Seth Signorelli at 132, Cody Comeaux at 138 and Hunter Hawkins at 170. Strong second-place finishers were: Ty Didier at 106, Jace Chenevert at 113, Corey Brownell at 120, Alex Simoneaux at 152, Conrad Mitchell at 160 and Alex Newman at 195.

At the Griffin Open on Nov. 17, hosted by Dutchtown High Wrestling, St. Amant had the best showing yet as they had 14 total individuals place, with seven of those placing first. Placing first for St. Amant were: 106-Ty Didier, 113-Jace Chenevert, 120-Corey Brownell, 126-Jacob Cardwell, 138-Cody Comeaux, 160-Conrad Mitchell and 170-Hunter Hawkins.

The team also took home the first-place trophy with a team score of 285.5.

Before the Thanksgiving break, St. Amant wrestlers competed in the 2018 Spartan Invitational held at East Ascension. Led by senior Hunter Hawkins (12-0), St. Amant won with a team score of 183.5, with Live Oak finishing second with a team score of 136.0 and East Ascension was third with a team score of 124.5.

The Spartan Invitational yielded two finalist in Corey Brownell and Hunter Hawkins. Unfortunately, Brownell came up short, dropping the match, 3-0. Hawkins won with a 9-4 decision over his opponent, Zachary’s Caleb Mickelson to become the only first-place finisher for St. Amant.

On Nov. 27, St. Amant will travel to Brother Martin for its first dual match of the season, along with East Ascension.
