Shortly after 6 p.m. on August 1, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a three vehicle crash on LA 935 at Beco Road in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 71-year-old Harriet Humphrey of St. Amant.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 17-year-old Lauren Launey of Prairieville was traveling southbound on Beco Rd. in a 2011 Ford Taurus. At the same time, 49-year-old Laine Cook of Gonzales was traveling westbound on LA 935 in a 2009 Ford F-350 pulling a boat. Launey failed to yield at the stop sign and began to cross LA 935 in the path of Cook’s vehicle. Launey’s vehicle collided with Cook’s vehicle in the westbound lane of LA 935. The impact caused Cook’s vehicle to cross the center line and strike a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado driven by 72-year-old Gene Humphrey of St. Amant head-on.

Gene and Harriet Humphrey were properly restrained in their vehicle. Harriet sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and Gene sustained moderate injuries. Harriet was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. Launey and Cook were also properly restrained and sustained minor injuries. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash, but a toxicology sample was taken from each driver for analysis. Troopers issued Launey a citation for Failure to Yield at a Stop. This crash remains under investigation and additional charges are pending.
