The tax redemption center will allow international visitors to redeem their paid state taxes in order to spend the money elsewhere in Louisiana during their visit.

Tanger Outlets along with Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser cut the ribbon on the new Louisiana Tax Free Shopping Redemption Center at the outlet mall. The center provides immediate sales tax refunds for international visitors, who would otherwise have to receive those refunds at an airport. Nungesser said this will be a great new asset for tourism in Ascension Parish.

"They stay longer, and they spend more money," said Nungesser. "They don't just come to see New Orleans. They come to see more than one city usually."

The tax redemption center will allow international visitors to redeem their paid state taxes in order to spend the money elsewhere in Louisiana during their visit. The first 50 attendees will receive a Tanger Outlets gift card and coupon book. Nungesser said once these international guests receive their refunds, they can spend that money at other businesses in the area and generate more revenue for the local economy.

"It's an opportunity to get them out of the big city, do some great shopping, and see other parts of Louisiana," said Nungesser. "So we'll use this as a tool in our toolbox to pull those visitors out of the Big Easy and make them see more of Louisiana."

The Gonzales Tanger Outlet Mall has been a major draw for international visitors to Louisiana. In 2017, Tanger Outlets Gonzales welcomed 171,000 international shoppers and 1.8 million total shoppers. Research shows that international shoppers spend four times as much on retail compared to their domestic counterparts.

Louisiana is a tourist destination for international guests. Last year, the Bayou State ranked second in the nation for growth in international tourism with a 37 percent increase. Nungesser said with more and more direct international flights out of New Orleans and this new tax rebate center, Louisiana is slated for continued growth in this area.

With the addition of this redemption center, Louisiana Tax Free Shopping will have a total of five throughout the state. These will continue to help spur additional spending and shopping in Louisiana’s retail spaces.

The sales tax refund is provided on tangible items purchased at tax-free stores and permanently removed from the United States. All Tanger stores will offer this tax break to international tourists. There is no refund for sales taxes paid for personal services, such as hotels, restaurants, entertainment and transportation.
