Two others caught opening weekend

The CCA Louisiana Statewide Tournament and Angler’s Rodeo (STAR), presented by Chevron, kicked off its 24th year of competition with a bang this Memorial Day weekend, as multiple tagged redfish were caught along the coast. For the past two years, CCA has tagged and released 100 redfish along the Louisiana coastline for its signature division, netting registered anglers everything from a new truck to boat packages.

On Sunday, Bryan Dorsey of Youngsville, caught a tagged redfish at Dry Reef in Vermillion Bay. This catch will win Dorsey a brand new Chevy Silverado donated by the Super Chevy Dealers of Acadiana, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, pending further investigation and required polygraph examination.

Dorsey had big plans to go to Grand Isle for Memorial Day Weekend but with the scare of bad weather decided to cancel the trip. Instead he made an afternoon trip to Vermilion Bay. His slight engine trouble forced him to stay inshore in the bay and fish for trout and redfish. That’s when he hooked the STAR tagged redfish at Dry Reef.

Eric Landry of New Iberia, caught another tagged redfish at Marsh Island in Vermilion Bay, but was unfortunately not registered for the tournament. And the third tagged redfish caught this weekend was caught and released on Rockfeller Refuge. In the days leading up to the tournament three other fish were caught in in Lafitte, Fourchon and Grand Isle and replaced before the start of the tournament.

“It just shows you that there are fish scattered all across the state and they aren’t hard to catch,” said STAR Tournament Director, Rad Trascher. “And there are plenty more great prizes still up for grabs.”

The second thru fifth registered anglers to catch a tagged redfish win 21ft Nautic STAR with 150hp 4-stroke Mercury Outboards and the 6 th thru 10 th anglers win a brand new Gatortail boat, motor and trailer package. Also, the first angler who catches a tagged redfish and is a Louisiana Sportsman Magazine subscriber, wins an extra $10,000 on top of the other great prize.

STAR is one of the largest and richest saltwater fishing tournaments in the state, offering over $500,000 in prizes. The tournament spans the entire Louisiana coast and is open to anglers of every age. With over 25 divisions, STAR has a division for you. The tournament runs until Labor Day, Monday, September 3, 2018.

Registration for the tournament is only $35 and you have to be a CCA member to participate. To register as well as see a complete list of divisions, weigh stations, sponsors and rules, visit CCASTAR.com.
