Several Ascension Public School students participated in the State Special Olympics games May 19, including students from Lakeside Primary, Galvez Middle, Lake Elementary, St. Amant High, and Dutchtown High. These students earned their spot at the state meet by bringing home a first place win in at least one event at the Capital Area Regional Meet in Baton Rouge in March.

This year’s competition took place at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond on, where Ascension students participated in multiple categories such as standing long jump, softball throw, 50 meter walk and run and powerlifting.

K’Von Albert, Chaase Haase and Collin Lewis competed in the games, representing Dutchtown High. In the state competition, Haase won gold medals in the 200 meter run and softball throw, and a bronze medal in the standing long jump. Lewis won golds in the softball throw and the standing long jump along with a bronze medal in the 100 meter run. Albert won a gold medal in bench press powerlifting and a 4th place ribbon in shot put.

From Lakeside Primary, Jordan Hughes received a gold in standing long jump, silver in softball throw, and silver in the 50 meter walk. Ransley Melancon acquired a gold in softball throw, silver in standing long jump, and a participation ribbon in the 50 meter walk.

Galvez Middle student Callie Howe participated in softball throw where she received a gold as well as the 50 meter run and standing long jump in which she received silvers.

Kagan Talbot, a student of Lake Elementary, received 4th place in the 50 meter run, obtained a gold in the standing long jump, and a bronze in the softball throw.

St. Amant High’s Colton Lee participated in powerlifting and received a bronze ribbon.
