The Mt. Volunteer Ascension Special Tuesdays
Special Tuesdays’ (Helping Hands for the Handicapped) summer fun starts in June. We will be at Gonzales Primary Cafeteria Tuesday, June 12, 19, and 26 from 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
St. Luke Food Pantry
The St. Luke Food Pantry will be open to the community's needy and / or elderly individuals every 3rd Friday of the month from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and on a daily basic as urgent need arise. Also St. Luke Food Pantry will be open on May 24 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Oak Grove Park Update
From AP Government: After speaking with the contractor, the Recreation Department has decided to delay replacing the water pipes under the Oak Grove Spray Park until after Labor Day. Therefore, the spray park will remain open throughout the summer. The Recreation Department will provide extra maintenance in order to keep the spray park operational.
Alzheimer’s Services Lunch-N-Learn
Behavioral Interventions Across the Stages is the topic. The meeting will be held Thursday, June 7, and Tuesday, June 12 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. The June 7 speaker is Barbara Anthony, RN, LNC and the June 12 speaker is Wanda Spurlock, DNS, RN-BC, CNE, FNGNA, FAANS. The meetings are held at East Baton Rouge Parish Library Main Branch, 7711 Goodwood Blvd., Baton Rouge, La. Alzheimer’s and other memory-related dementias often are accompanied by behaviors we are not always prepared to handle. Often, the behaviors in dementia do challenge us, as well as the personal experiencing them. This presentation will focus on the different behavioral interventions helpful across the stages of the disease. The session is free, includes a light lunch, and is approved for one general social work continuing education unit. Registration is required the day before each session. Jehovah’s Witnesses Convention
We will be having two Conventions at the Raising Cane’s River Center. Baton Rouge, La. June 22-24 and June 29-July 1. The program will begin each day at 9:20 a.m. and conclude Friday and Saturday at 4:50 p.m. and Sunday at 3:50 p.m. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. for persons 65 and above and those with disabilities. General admission is at 8:15 a.m. There is no charged admission and no collections will be taken. Conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses are supported by voluntary donations.
Gov. Edwards on Death of Ella Brennan
Ella Brennan, of New Orleans restaurant fame, passed May 31. “Ella Brennan was an icon in the culinary industry, and she graciously shared her passion for New Orleans and our cuisine with the world,” said Gov. John Bel Edwards. “She was a trailblazer with a tenacious spirit who made it her mission to learn everything possible about the restaurant business from the ground up and as a result, she set a standard of excellence that was unmatched. Donna and I send our deepest condolences and prayers to the Brennan family and friends. Ella’s legacy will live on throughout the state of Louisiana.”
The W President's List
Mississippi University for Women has named Racine Jackson of Gonzales to the Spring 2018 President's list, which honors undergraduate students achieving a quality point average of 4.0 on a 4.0 scale for the semester. The university congratulates those students who choose to dare, dream and achieve.
Samford Dean's List
James W Miley III of Prairieville, LA, was named to the spring 2018 Dean's List at Samford University. Miley is a Senior Finance major and attended Parkview Baptist School. Samford releases dean's lists after the close of the fall and spring semesters each academic year. To qualify for the dean's list, a student must have earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average out of a possible 4.0 while attempting at least 12 credit hours of coursework. Dean's List is the highest academic recognition given by the school at the end of each semester. This past semester, nearly 1,400 students qualified.
Summer Arts Classes for Adults
The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge has created new summer programming for teens and adults in addition to its regular Artsplosion! Summer Camp for kids. Each course is led by a local teaching artist and designed to introduce students to a new skill, bringing more creativity, freedom, and fun into their lives. Courses include: The Art of Documentary Filmmaking; Melody and Structure in Community Drumming; Contemporary Modern Dance; Improv 101; What is Printmaking? – an intro to a centuries-old art form.
