Click it or Ticket

The Gonzales Police Department, having been awarded a Grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety commission, will be taking part in the upcoming Click it or Ticket National Mobilization event May 21 thru June 3 and will have officers out writing tickets to those who do not have their seatbelt secured and passengers. Save a life and buckle up.

Memorial Day Observance

On Monday, May 28th, the Ascension Veterans Memorial Park Foundation will host a Memorial Day observance at Veterans Park, Gonzales, La. at 10 a.m. The Veterans Park is located at 612 S. Irma Blvd in Gonzales (next to Ascension Parish Library). The AVMP Foundation would like to extend an invitation for you and your family to attend this event. Hundreds will gather around the Park Amphitheater to remember those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country so that we may continue to live our lives in freedom. Local organizations participating in the Memorial Day event included the American Legion Post 81 and Auxiliary, St. Amant High School Navy JROTC, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 725 and Associate Members, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3693 and Auxiliary, Women Veterans of Louisiana, Gonzales Police Department, and other local citizens. Refreshments will be provided after the ceremony.

Dville Veterans Program

Donaldsonville hosts a Memorial Day Observance Veterans Program on Friday, May 25 at 11 a.m. The ceremony will take place at Louisiana Square, 308 Railroad Avenue. The ceremony will include an opening prayer and guest speaker. Following that portion will be a reading of names, ringing of the bell and a 21 gun salute. There will be a playing of taps and free jambalaya under tents. Everyone is invited.

Volunteer Ascension Special Tuesdays

Special Tuesdays’ (Helping Hands for the Handicapped) summer fun starts in June. We will be at Gonzales Primary Cafeteria Tuesday, June 12, 19, and 26 from 1 p.m.-5 p.m.

The Greater Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church Men's Department is having its 1st Annual Cookout (Come Taste Your Flavor) on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 10 a.m.-until. Harvest Time Food Bank

St. Luke Food Pantry

The St. Luke Food Pantry will be open to the community's needy and / or elderly individuals every 3rd Friday of the month from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and on a daily basic as urgent need arise. Also St. Luke Food Pantry will be open on May 24 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day

Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa announced today parish government will be accepting household hazardous waste at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center on Saturday, June 2, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event is free for Ascension Parish residents. The expo center is located at 9039 St. Landry Road, Gonzales, but people are asked to enter through the Ashland Road entrance, because the collection will take place under Barn 6. Accepted are items such as tires, appliances, batteries, and paint. Not accepted are things such as explosive or radioactive materials, paper, aluminum, and plastic. A more complete list can be seen on the attached flier, which also is published on the Parish website and Facebook page. This event is reserved for Ascension Parish residents only, so participants should be prepared to show proper ID which includes residential street address. LA 42 Road Closure

Construction has begun for State Project H.002370, LA 42 Widening. The project consists of grading, drainage structures, subgrade treatment, drilled shaft foundations, traffic signalization, landscaping, asphalt concrete pavement, portland cement concrete pavement, and related work in Ascension Parish. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that there will be road closure of LA 44 @ LA 42 from Friday - Sunday, May 18 8:00 p.m. to May 20 6:00 p.m. with a detour in place. Work in this area consists of paving the tie-in to existing LA 44 into new LA 44. LA 44 will be closed in both directions for 1500 feet south of LA 42 only allowing local traffic. Traffic will be detoured to AP 929 and Parker Rd. Work will be completed weather permitting. No permit or oversize loads along with emergency vehicles will be able to pass.

Naturalist Speaker

“From Girl Scout to Professional Naturalist” talk will be presented by Claire Coco, Manager of BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center for the past 18 years, on Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m. at the Bluebonnet Library. The talk will focus on Coco’s love of the outdoors which has taken her to various locations and finally back to her hometown of Baton Rouge and what she has learned along the way. Enrichment Monday

On Monday, May 21 and June 11, 2018, 9:30 a.m. the West Baton Rouge Museum is offering monthly training on various topics. Each month will feature a different topic that highlights a particular skill or activity the museum wishes to explore. Current volunteers, staffers, and community members interested in volunteering are invited to attend. This month, we will be focusing on spinning and weaving demonstrations for school groups. June's topic will address the Museum's newly inaugurated Juke Joint and the parish's connection to Blues' history.
