The Louisiana Retired Teachers Association inaugurated Janis Hernandez of Gonzales as first vice president on April 25. Hernandez will also serve as the state membership chair. She has been an active member with LRTA, and the group is excited to have her as first vice president.

Hernandez and her husband relocated to Ascension Parish after working extensively with the Jefferson Parish Public School system. Shortly after, she received an invitation from the Ascension Retired Teacher Association, and she became president of the Ascension RTA one year later.

Hernandez has held esteemed leadership positions with the LRTA. She served as vice president and president for District IV, which encompasses Ascension, East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Iberville, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, and Pointe Coupee parishes.

Previously, she served as second vice president and state program chair for the LRTA. In recognition of her leadership, LRTA honored Hernandez with the Name of Fame award in April of 2017.

As first vice president, she will serve as chairman of the Membership Committee. She will be responsible for working with the district first vice presidents on membership promotion. Hernandez will also preside at meetings in the absence of the president.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent retired teachers. I became active in the organization to help protect our benefits and that’s my main goal," said Hernandez. "I am thrilled that they’ve placed the confidence in me to help increase the membership in order to keep our organization viable.”

Hernandez holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Northeast Louisiana University, now the University of Louisiana at Monroe. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, sewing, reading, following ULM sports and LSU Lady Tiger Basketball, and simply enjoying retirement with family and friends.

LRTA is a nonprofit organization that is devoted to protecting and enhancing benefits for individuals receiving retirement benefits from the Teachers' Retirement System of Louisiana. Although LRTA headquarters are based in Baton Rouge, the organization serves thousands of retired educators across the state.
