Hopefully, I’ll get to hang out with Grace again while she’s still young enough to rest in my lap.
Let me tell you about the time I fangirled over a sloth.
I had the pleasure of visiting Barn Hill Preserve in Ethel, La. over the weekend. I got the chance to meet and interact with animals like kangaroos, camels, cockatoos, and even sloths. Needless to say, I was over the moon and then some.
I was, perhaps, a little too eager to get to know some of the animals. I think I frightened the guys who work there by being overly friendly with some of the fur babies and getting closer than they would have liked. The guys were concerned I was going to get bitten by one of the animals. But hey, if I get taken out by a fluffy kangaroo who wants to play, that’s just fine by me.
Hanging out with kangaroos was one highlight of the trip. I actually got to get up-close-and-personal with one of the joeys and fed him inside their pen. I gave him snacks and we selfied, so we’re basically best friends now.
Add in there all the birds, tortoises, dogs, and large cats, and it was like being Steve Irwin for a day. There were all kinds of animals waiting to be pet and fed. Hanging out with all of these awesome creatures was definitely an animal lover’s dream.
While I was super pumped to meet all of the animals Barn Hill had to offer, the sloth was probably my favorite. (Okay she was definitely my favorite, but don’t tell the kangaroos.) Her name is Grace, and she is an eight-month-old, two-toed sloth who was just too cute for words.
All my excitement from the day came to a head when we went to meet her.
I feel like I’ve literally been waiting my entire life to meet a sloth. The recent social media craze has definitely heightened my love for them, though I feel like a sleepy, perpetually-hungry sloth may actually be my spirit animal.
So I got to hold Grace (a couple of times) and held onto her probably longer than the workers usually allow. I was completely giddy. I was maybe even a bit embarrassingly excited about finally getting to hold and pet a baby sloth. This is the stuff dreams are made of.
I’ve been known to get a little too excited about things from time to time. I get worked up over all sorts of things, but nothing compares to my adventure at Barn Hill Preserve. I was even more excited to be there than a little girl celebrating her 10th birthday party. Since I’m “grown” to some degree, I feel like that’s worth noting.
Because I did not get a chance to meet the otters on site (or swim with them because it turns out that’s a thing), I am already planning my second trip. Hopefully, I’ll get to hang out with Grace again while she’s still young enough to rest in my lap.
If you love animals as much as I do, you would love visiting Barn Hill Preserve. Take the kids and tell Grace I said hi!
