“It is so gratifying to have so many people in our community generously donate to support these worthy causes, and by helping those most in need." --Kerry Songy, Women's Advisory Council Chairperson

The St. Elizabeth Women's Advisory Council held the 2nd Annual Rubber Duck Derby Fundraiser on January 20 at the Lamar-Dixon Pond. The event followed the St. Elizabeth Family Fest and raised money for local breast cancer screenings through the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, as well as nursing scholarships.

"The Duck Derby was very successful. This was a great way to raise funds not only for local breast cancer screenings, but also for our nursing scholarship program,” stated Kerry Songy, Women's Advisory Council Chairperson. “It is so gratifying to have so many people in our community generously donate to support these worthy causes, and by helping those most in need."

Numbered ducks were "adopted" for $10 each that corresponded to a raffle ticked for a chance to win valuable prizes. The event provided an opportunity for the entire community to get involved in the fundraising effort.

“Our goal was accomplished by serving our community to make it a better place,” stated Dee LeJeune. “I personally want to thank everyone for your contribution toward making this event a success!”

Buckets of rubber ducks were emptied into the water at the starting line of the derby in the Lamar-Dixon pond. The Gonzales Fire Department then sprayed the ducks from one side of the pond to the other.

There were 21 winning ducks in the derby with the first 20 to float to the finish line all winning a prize, as well as the very last duck to make it ashore. The prizes included a 55' Smart TV, a ladies watch provided by Layne's Jewelry, a 45 quart Yeti cooler, and various gift cards.

The St. Elizabeth Women's Advisory Council was formed to enhance communication between the hospital and the community. The organization seeks to foster a better understanding of the services provided by St. Elizabeth. The council also provides four nursing scholarships each year.
