School gardens in Ascension Parish have benefited greatly from the Greauxing Gardens grant. The school garden grant is now in its second year in several of the primary and middle schools of Ascension Parish. The initial grant making the program possible was in the amount of $30,000 from Nutrien, previously PCS Nitrogen, a subsidiary of Potash Corporation of Canada. This year Nutrien has graciously given another grant to Greauxing Gardens in the amount of $10,000. Dr. Kiki Fontenot, LSU AgCenter Vegetable Specialist, is coordinating the program, while Ascension Parish Master Gardeners serve as advisors to each participating school.

As the school year has progressed, students and teachers have already planted their gardens and are actively working with their crops. Gardening teaches the students that by planting a seed into the soil they have the potential to feed their family and friends. Three schools - Lakeside Primary, Galvez Middle, and St. Amant Primary - are in the process of rebuilding their school gardens because the gardens were totally destroyed in last year’s flood.
