A Dutchtown High School student will be atop a float in a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans this carnival season. Abby Shexnaydre, 16, will be a maid in the Krewe of Thoth parade on February 11 in the Big Easy.

The theme of this year's parade is "The Way Thoth Rolls," and Shexnaydre will bring that theme to life with her southern belle attire. Thoth is ons of the largest Mardi Gras organizations, boasting 1,700 members. The krewe parades throughout the Crescent City, even passing by children's hospitals and senior living facilities to bring Mardi Gras to those who cannot go to it.

Shexnaydre is no stranger to the carnival. She's been a junior maid in the parade before and has now moved up the ranks. Her grandfather Elmore Steinert has been riding in the parade for 44 years, and her brother, Jared, is celebrating his sixth year atop a float.

Shexnaydre is a junior honor roll student at Dutchtown. She is on the swim team and also works at St. John's Church.
