Parish President Kenny Matassa proclaimed November 30, 2017 as AJ Nickens Day in Ascension Parish.

Nickens served on the Ascension Parish School Board for 38 years after being elected in 1977. He held the offices of president and vice president for several terms. Nickens currently serves as Chairman of the Ascension Parish Democratic Committee and has worked on campaigns to help numerous officials become elected.

Nickens helped to organize the Galvez - Lake Volunteer Fire Department. He was instrumental in getting the first firetruck for the force. He also served on the finance committee of the Ascension Credit Union and is a trustee of Galvez Pentecostal Church.

Nickens and his wife Gwen have been married for 60 years and have four children. His family travelled throughout the South performing gospel music. He's recorded three LP albums and one live 8-track tape. He plays guitar and has performed as a ventriloquist with a custom-made dummy named Jedidiah. He has a love for old cars, owning a 1924 Ford Model T, a 1939 Chrysler, a 1999 Cadillac El Dorado, and two Continental touring busses.

Even after celebrating his eightieth birthday recently, Nickens is showing no signs and has no intentions of slowing down.
