A crew of about 20 workers spent Wednesday and Thursday working on the upgrades. Many of the volunteers are Lowe's employees who came out to work on their days off. Several even donated money from their own pockets towards the Christmas tree lighting to take place later this year.

Jambalaya Park in Gonzales is getting a facelift courtesy of Lowe's Project Hero. The home improvement store donated supplies and manpower to revamp the park ahead of the holiday festivities.

Railings have been replaced on the foot bridge over Bayou Francois along with some fresh paint. Rotting boards were taken out, and a guard rail will be installed along the base to prevent dropped valuables from falling into the water.

The walls, seats, and stage of the amphitheater were pressure washed, and graffiti was removed from underneath the stairwell. Covers were replaces on electrical outlets in the outdoor theater as well.

With some help from the Gonzales Garden Club, volunteers replanted the butterfly garden with annuals and butterfly-friendly flowers. The gardens in the theater were mulched, and new flowers were planted on either side of the foot bridge.

Pro Services Specialist with Lowe's Stephanie Morris said it's their way of giving back during the holiday season. She said Lowe's is part of Ascension Parish with employees who live, work, and go to school in the parish. Project Hero is all about doing something to impact the area.

"We wanted to do something to give back to the community and do something for the kids," said Morris.

Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux is overjoyed at the generosity of both Lowe's and the volunteers. He's thrilled the upgrades will be made in time for the Christmas celebration. Any money left over after the work is complete will go towards new Christmas decorations for the event.
