Ascension Parish Sheriff's deputies are investigating an overnight shooting in Prairieville that left one man dead and another wounded. The victims were discovered this morning at the home on Tillotson Road, which runs between Parker Road and West Lane.

Authorities identified the deceased man as 61-year-old Byron Hayes. The homeowner, 70-year-old Douglas Tillotson, is in the hospital in critical condition. Hayes is the nephew of the homeowner and lived in an apartment next door to the home where both men were shot.

Chief Deputy Bobby Webre said no suspects have been identified at this time. He said it's early on in the investigation, but he is confident law enforcement will get to the bottom of it. He said the residential area has had a bit of traffic over the last several months, which could be a factor in the case.

"This is a quiet neighborhood, but we knew the subjects or the victims that lived in this house," Webre said, " . . . and we don't think this was a random act of violence. We think this was targeted."

Webre said residents in the area should not be concerned, as it's possible the killer knew the victims. The investigation is ongoing.

Neighbor James Johnson said the victim "lived a dangerous lifestyle." But he said he could not wager a guess as to who would want to harm the elderly man.

"He wasn't exactly a minister, you know what I'm saying, but I don't know of him being violent in any way. I don't know of him being a thief. I can't say anything about drug affiliation because if that was a part of his life, then he kept that to hisself," Johnson said.
