EARLY VOTING BEGINS SEPTEMBER 30 – OCTOBER 7

Don’t forget to GEAUX VOTE! Early voting for the October 14, 2017 Primary election will begin on Saturday, September 30 through October 7. This election is being held to elect a new State Treasurer, a State Representative for District 58, three (3) statewide Propositions, and the City of Gonzales Proposition. Voters may check to see what is on their ballot at www.geauxvote.com. For more information, voters may call the Registrar of Voters offices at 225-621-5780 (Gonzales) or 225-473-7906 (Donaldsonville). Early voting is conducted in the Registrar of Voters offices in Gonzales at 828 S Irma Blvd, Rm 205 and in Donaldsonville at 300 Houmas St., Ste B. The hours of early voting are from 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Don't forget! A valid picture ID is required!

Arc of East Ascension needs donations

The Arc of East Ascension will host their personal needs drive, better known as Cram the Van, this Saturday, October 7 at the Gonzales Wal-mart located at 308 Airline Highway from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are looking for personal items benefitting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: Depends adult underwear (XL/XXL Male or Female), Towels (big and small), Bedding (Queen-Full), Detergent, Soap/Body Wash, Oral Hygiene, Paper Towels, Dishwashing Liquid, Baby Wipes, Tissue Paper, First Aid Supplies, Cleaning Supplies, Deodorant (male or female), Flushable Wipes, Bottled Water, and or Kleenex.

Medicare education for seniors

Ascension Council on Aging will be hosting a MIPPA Education Event for senior citizens of Ascension parish. MIPPA is the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008. Our guest speaker will be Giselle Lee of Capital Area Agency on Aging. The event will be available to both of our centers as follows: Donaldsonville Senior Center on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. and Gonzales Senior Center on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Seniors are urged to take advantage of these important events. APSO participates in Coffee with a Cop

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office will be participating in the national Coffee with a Cop day this Wednesday, October 4 at two locations from 6-8 a.m. One location is Carli-Co Café in Gonzales and the other is Minnie’s Café in Donaldsonville. Hope to see you there!

Message from the Interfraternity Council at LSU

According to an official statement: "Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Maxwell Gruver’s family and loved ones. We are committed to the health and safety of all those in the LSU community.

"As a visual reminder of this commitment and in remembrance of Max, chapters at LSU will be displaying gold and white ribbons outside of their chapter facilities for the remainder of the fall semester."

Gov. Edwards local board appointments

Taneka Harris Blacknell, of Prairieville, was appointed to the Human Trafficking Prevention Commission Advisory Board. Blacknell is a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As required by statute, she will serve as a representative with expertise in advocacy for adult victims of human trafficking. Richard M. Pittman, of Gonzales, was appointed to the Human Trafficking Prevention Commission Advisory Board. Pittman is an attorney and the Director of Juvenile Defender Services for the Louisiana Public Defender Board. As required by statute, he will serve as a public defender and was nominated by the Louisiana Public Defender Board.

St. James Road Closure

A road closure will take place daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on LA 18 northbound & southbound on Saturday, October 7, 2017 and Sunday, October 15, 2017. No thru traffic will be allowed to pass during this road closure. The closure will be from Sydney Rd. to Syongy Ln. The closure is necessary for the installation of steel girders for the pipe rack across LA 18 for YCI’s MOF project. In the event of an emergency, the limestone diversion road adjacent to LA 18 will be available for emergency vehicles to pass through the closure. No regular traffic will be allowed to use this during the closure times. Detour routes for non-emergency vehicles are as follows: Northbound – Take LA 18 to LA 3219 turn right on LA 3127, then right on LA 70 to LA 18. Southbound – Take LA 18, turn left on LA 70, and turn left on 3127 to LA 3219 to LA 18.

Livingston Road Closure

I-12, Eastbound and Westbound Travel Lanes, from Approx. 3 miles West of Livingston (LA 63) to 1 mile East of LA 441 (Holden), will be closed Wednesday, October 4, 2017 through Friday, October 6, 2017 from 8:00 pm - 6:00 am, nightly (weather permitting). At least one lane will remain open at all times. These lane closures are to allow crews to facilitate traffic transition to next phase of road construction. Motorists may take US 190 as an alternate route to avoid nightly lane closures during construction.
