Early voting begins September 30 – October 7

Don’t forget to Geaux Vote! Early voting for the October 14, 2017 Primary election will begin on Saturday, September 30 through October 7. This election is being held to elect a new State Treasurer, a State Representative for District 58, three (3) statewide Propositions, and the City of Gonzales Proposition. Voters may check to see what is on their ballot at www.geauxvote.com. For more information, voters may call the Registrar of Voters offices at 225-621-5780 (Gonzales) or 225-473-7906 (Donaldsonville). Early voting is conducted in the Registrar of Voters offices in Gonzales at 828 S Irma Blvd, Rm 205 and in Donaldsonville at 300 Houmas St., Ste B. The hours of early voting are from 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Don't forget! A valid picture ID is required!

National Merit Semifinalists

On September 13, officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. In Ascension Parish, two students qualified: Abby M. Guillory of Dutchtown H.S. and Blaire C. Peterson of St. Amant H.S. Congrats! 

Ascension Council on Aging holding membership drive

The Ascension Council on Aging is holding its annual membership drive until October 2, 2017. Membership in the council is open without restrictions to parish residents who have reached the age of majority. There is no fee for membership. Persons interested in the problems and concerns of the elderly and wishing to serve in some capacity may apply at 101 Bocage Drive in Donaldsonville and 526 South Irma Boulevard in Gonzales. L'Applause to feature Huggy Bear

The River Road African American Museum will host L'Applause this weekend, September 23, 2017 at 8 p.m. at the NOPSI Hotel located at 317 Baronne Street in New Orleans. Tickets are on sale now for $125. It was announced today that the event, a Tribute to Hollywood's Black Stunt Performers, will feature guest host Antonio "Huggy Bear" Fargas. LA 18 St. James Parish road closure

A road closure will take place daily from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on LA 18 northbound & southbound beginning Saturday, September 23, 2017 extending through Sunday, September 24, 2017. No thru traffic will be allowed to pass during this road closure. The closure will be from Sydney Rd. to Syongy Ln. The closure is necessary for the installation of steel girders for the pipe rack across LA 18 for YCI’s MOF project. In the event of an emergency, the limestone diversion road adjacent to LA 18 will be available for emergency vehicles to pass through the closure. No regular traffic will be allowed to use this during the closure times. Detour routes for non-emergency vehicles are as follows:
Northbound – Take LA 18 to LA 3219 turn right on LA 3127, then right on LA 70 to LA 18.
Southbound – Take LA 18, turn left on LA 70, and turn left on 3127 to LA 3219 to LA 18.

Louisiana State Board of Private Investigator Examiners

The Louisiana State Board of Private Investigator Examiners licenses private investigators and businesses in the state of Louisiana in order to contribute to the safety, health, and welfare of the people of Louisiana. Jonathan E. Mitchell, of Prairieville, was appointed to the Louisiana State Board of Private Investigator Examiners. Mitchell is an attorney with deGravelles & Palmintier. He will serve as the attorney member on the board.

LWC hosts statewide youth job fairs

Several locations of the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC)’s Business and Career Solutions Centers (BCSCs) will host job fairs this month for out-of-school youth ages 18-24. The event is designed to supply young adults with employment opportunities and possible career pathways. The Recruitment Day will take place on Thursday, September 21 from 3-6 p.m. at the Ascension BCSC: 1721 South Burnside Ave., Gonzales.

Phone scam referencing Entergy

Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon is advising residents that his office is receiving complaints from residents indicating that they are being contacted by persons representing themselves as being delinquent bill collectors from Entergy. The caller advises residents that their Entergy bill is overdue and they must pay by phone “NOW” to avoid interruption of service. These calls originate from a variety of different numbers and the caller appears to be foreign. The Sheriff cautions residents not to send any money in response to calls of this nature.
