One local automotive business is giving back to the children in the community in a big way by offering free school supplies during a back-to-school event this weekend.
2-Row-2 Auto Spa Kutz & More owners Ferika and Mark Tureaud started Cars for Kids: Back 2 School Car Show three years ago as a way to help others in the community and surrounding areas.
"We have been blessed, God blesses us, so we feel that when you are blessed like that you ought to be a blessing to someone else," Mark said. "We have two young kids and we're able to provide for them, not everyone is able to provide for their kids the same way."
The Gonzales business owner noted that the event gets bigger and bigger every year. When they began in 2014 they were only able to pass out 150 schoolbags filled with supplies, now they have more than doubled that number to 400 bags from various donations and sponsors, though most of the contributions come from The Tureauds,
In addition to the school giveaway, there will also be carnival style activities and rides, a DJ and a car show which will feature a variety of vehicles in different categories such as New & Old School, Chopper, Modified and Best of Show.
"We have a passion for cars, fixing them up, we like real clean cars. We own a detail shop, it's our way of combining the two," he said. "My wife and I, both of us together we do this. She has a true love of giving back and for the kids."
The free back-to-school event will be held on July 30 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center 4-H building. Vehicle registration begins at 11 a.m. and is $20 for outside and $30 for inside, with judging at 4 p.m. and a trophy presentation at 6 p.m. The book sack giveaway is from 2-4 p.m.
