For the third straight summer, the Gauthier & Amedee Wombats have seen their season end in the semifinals of the American Legion State Tournament.

Facing defending state champion Pedal Valve—a team they had beaten just a week earlier, 12-0, in the semifinals of the regional tournament—the Wombats raced out to a 4-0 lead.

They were just four innings away from the state championship game when Pedal Valve rallied back.

They scored three in the fourth, but Gauthier & Amedee was still clinging to a 5-3 advantage in the top of the seventh inning.

There, Pedal Valve was able to score two runs to tie the game, and an Andrew Morrow RBI single off of St. Amant’s Jacob Spell gave them their first lead of the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Wombats failed to mount any offense. Their season ended with a heartbreaking 6-5 loss.

In defeat, St. Amant’s Zane Zeppuhar was the only Wombat to record multiple hits. He went 2-4 and scored a run.

St. Amant’s Ivan Prejean, Dutchtown’s Jack Merrifield and East Ascension’s Cameron Schexnaildre all drove in runs.

East Ascension’s Noah Fontenot pitched five and a third innings. He gave up just three hits and three runs, while striking out seven. Though, he did walk six batters.

With the loss, Gauthier & Amedee’s season ends with an overall record of 24-6-1.
