If you’re hungry for a day trip to take with your family this weekend, visit the 50th annual Jambalaya Festival in Gonzales, which claims to be the Jambalaya Capital of the World.

The festival will feature rides, live entertainment, a pageant, a car show, food and several cooking competitions throughout Memorial Day weekend.

Dozens of cooks will battle it out for the title of World Champion Jambalaya, a competition that requires cooks to use fresh vegetables, seasonings and meat to create a jambalaya from scratch in a black cast-iron pot over a wood-fueled fire. There will be tickets sold to sample jambalayas of those competing. The championship kicks off Friday, with the semi-finalists announced on Saturday evening and the new champion announced on Sunday.

The previous winner of Jambalaya World Championship will also be cooking his jambalaya recipe throughout the weekend.

The festival grounds are at 219 South Irma Blvd., Gonzales. For information, visit jamabalayafestival.org.
