Volunteer Ascension, in partnership with the American Red Cross, is hosting a Shelter Training Class on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Public Safety Training Center located at 724 W. Orice Roth Road in Gonzales. The free class will focus on registering shelter residents, mass feeding procedures, comfort care and supply management.

This is the second time Volunteer Ascension has hosted this class, and after the events that occurred last year, many have continually asked for it to be held again.

"During disasters, we are blessed to always have so many Ascension Parish residents asking, “how can we help?”," said Volunteer Ascension Executive Director Sherry Denig. "We encourage anyone with a heart for service to attend this shelter class and become certified to help bring comfort to those who have been displaced from their home during a disaster. It is a wonderful opportunity to work one-on-one with people in their time of need."

Upon completion, attendees will receive a certification in sheltering, which will allow them the proper skills to care for individuals during a shelter when the next natural disaster occurs.
