The Christmas party for area senior citizens held annually at the Gonzales Civic Center will relocate to the Lamar Dixon Expo Center this year. The event is sponsored each year by the City of Gonzales and Gonzales Rotary Club.
“Unfortunately, the Gonzales Civic Center was substantially damaged during the August flood,” said Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux. “I am grateful to Parish President Kenny Matassa, Sheriff Jeff Wiley, and Assessor Mert Smiley for stepping up so we can continue our tradition."
Smiley said he is honored to assist with the program.
“I am very supportive of this year’s Christmas party for seniors,” Smiley said. “The seniors are the cornerstone of our parish and I am honored to help provide this Christmas celebration for them.”
The Ascension Senior Citizens Christmas Party will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at Lamar Dixon’s Trade Mart Building.
“This annual gathering is so important for our seniors and I am glad to offer Lamar Dixon as a temporary home,” said President Kenny Matassa. “Together, we survived the flood and together we will celebrate our blessings.”
The entertainment will be provided by Kenny Fife and the Bac Trac Band.
“It is important to continue what the City of Gonzales has done for so many years for the cream of our crop—our seniors,”Sheriff Jeff Wiley said. “Now more than ever we want to celebrate them during this trying year.”
The city plans to maintain the event back in the city limits in 2017.
