The City of Baton Rouge now has its first-ever Youth Poet Laureate, and she's from Ascension Parish.

Jolie Gilbert, 18, of Prairieville is a 2015 graduate of Dutchtown High School. Gilbert performed as a member of the school's poetry slam team and went on to become a member of the Forward Arts All Stars, the youth poetry slam team of area arts-based non profit, Forward Arts. She now attends LSU and is majoring in creative writing.

Gilbert was chosen through a juried showcase, held April 10 at the Old Governor's Mansion, Baton Rouge. Serving in her position along with Brittany Marshall, with whom she tied, the role of the Youth Poet-Laureate is to serve as an ambassador for youth poetry in the Baton Rouge area. The two will work with established poets, such as former state Poet Laureate, Ava Haymon, in developing their own full length books of poetry.
