  • ACHS's Johnson and Thurman sign with colleges

  • Ascension Christian tennis player Kennan Johnson signed a national letter of intent last week with the University of Central Florida, and swimmer Alexandra Thurman signed with Adams State University in Colorado.

  • Ascension Christian tennis player Kennan Johnson signed a national letter of intent last week with the University of Central Florida, and swimmer Alexandra Thurman signed with Adams State University in Colorado.
    Johnson attracted the attention of coaches from around the country with her national ranking as a doubles and singles player. In junior tennis, 18 and under, Johnson is ranked second in the state overall. She is ranked 23rd in the USTA – Southern Region.
    In 2012, Johnson won the LHSAA Division V Ladies Singles title at the state tournament in Monroe. She is known not only for her tennis but for her character. Recently, she was honored with the Bill Ozaki Southern Sportsmanship Award given to players who exemplify sportsmanship and character on and off the court.
    Johnson said that once she gets to UCF, her goals have to go to the next level. She was also offered scholarship opportunities at the Naval Academy, Michigan State University, Liberty University, University of Iowa and Iowa State University.
    Johnson is a third generation tennis player in her family. Her grandmother, Lynda Johnson, was a professional tennis instructor and her mother, Natalie, played tennis for LSU from 1993-1995.
    Thurman's signing comes after being recruited by several colleges and universities.
    Thurman recently competed in the Capital City Swim League Championship where she placed fifth in the 200 meter individual medley and fifth in the 500 meter freestyle. She has led the Ascension Christian swim team for the past four years.
    She went on to win the 200 individual medley at the state meet in Sulphur.
    Thurman plans on majoring in civil engineering. She swims with Tiger Aquatics. She is the daughter of Carr and Sonja Thurman of Prairieville.
