Parish officials closed a bridge that crosses Bayou Lafourche, southwest of Donaldsonville, Tuesday evening until bridge inspectors can assess damage caused by construction crews.
Parish President Tommy Martinez ordered the bridge to be closed around 5:30 p.m. after work being done by a construction company for the Bayou Lafourche Fresh Water District Dredging Project caused damage to a cross beam at water level, said Ascension Parish Westside Coordinator George Rodeillat.
The closed bridge is located approximately .75 miles (3/4 mile) downstream of the LA 308 railroad bridge crossover of Bayou Lafourche. It is located just south of a Sonic Drive-In Restaurant and connects LA 1 South to LA 308, Rodeillat said.
Rodeillat said Ascension Parish deputies were called to the scene to block off entrances onto the bridge from LA 1 and LA 308. He said parish DPW crews were dispatched to the scene to block off the bridge with lighted barricades.
“This closing is purely a precautionary measure at this point,” Rodeillat said. “It will remain closed until bridge structural inspections can take place.”
